From December to March the humpbacks are in along the Kohala coast, and Kawaihae is the closest harbour to where they gather. Two-hour trips, three departures a day, capped at 30 guests so everyone has a rail to stand at.
Breaching, tail slaps, mothers with calves and the low sound of the males singing through the hull. Simple, affordable and about as reliable as wildlife viewing gets in Hawaii.
