The single most requested activity on the Big Island, and the one guests talk about for years. You climb from sea level to the Maunakea summit — 13,800 feet, above 40% of the atmosphere — for sunset above the clouds, then descend to a dark-sky site for stargazing with your guide's telescopes.
Hawaii Forest & Trail run this properly: a hot picnic dinner (Southwest stew or vegan chilli), hooded parkas and gloves because it is genuinely near freezing at the top, and a maximum of 14 guests. Ages 13 and up because of the altitude. Easy to moderate walking on uneven ground.
