Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge is closed to the public. This tour has permitted access, and for anyone who cares about native Hawaiian birds it is the single best day available in the state — 'i'iwi, 'apapane, 'akiapola'au and 'akepa in genuine native koa-ohia forest rather than at the edge of a car park.
The trip runs in 4WD Mercedes Sprinters built for small groups and rough access roads, with best-in-class field guides, binoculars, trekking poles, day packs, warm wear and rain ponchos supplied. A full day: 11 to 12 hours, ages 8 and up.
